Which U.S. States Do Other Americans Travel To The Most?

Americans Have Some Clear Vacation Favorites

Americans have 50 states to choose from without ever leaving the country, but their trips are far from evenly distributed. Warm beaches, famous cities, theme parks, mountains, family visits, and easy road trips repeatedly pull travelers toward a relatively small group of states. Recent domestic travel data shows that California, Florida, Texas, and New York remain particularly powerful magnets. A few less obvious states also attract enormous numbers of trips every year.Usm 1200X624Factinate Ltd

Measuring Domestic Travel Gets Complicated

There is no single federal database that counts every American crossing a state line for vacation, and states sometimes use different definitions of a visitor. One useful comparison comes from Omnitrak's 2024 domestic person-trip data published by Visit North Carolina. It ranks California first, followed by Florida, Texas, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Georgia, Ohio, and Michigan. That ranking gives us a consistent starting point for looking at where Americans travel.

California Takes The Top Spot

California ranked first in the 2024 Omnitrak domestic person-trip ranking. Visit California also reported a record $157.3 billion in travel spending during 2024, demonstrating the enormous scale of the state's visitor economy. Domestic travelers are especially important to that business, accounting for 94 percent of California visits in 2024. California's size also means a trip there can look completely different depending on which part of the state you choose.

California Offers Almost Every Kind Of Vacation

California can sell a beach trip, city break, national park adventure, wine getaway, ski vacation, or theme park holiday without sending travelers across a state border. Visit California highlights destinations ranging from Disneyland Resort and Universal Studios Hollywood to Yosemite, Death Valley, and the state's Pacific beaches. California has nine national parks, more than any other state. That variety helps explain why it can attract families, outdoor travelers, road trippers, and urban tourists at the same time.

Florida Remains An American Vacation Giant

Florida placed second in Omnitrak's 2024 domestic person-trip ranking. VISIT FLORIDA reported approximately 130.7 million domestic visitors in 2024, accounting for more than 91 percent of total visitation. That was an increase from the previous year and helped Florida set another overall visitation record. Americans, rather than overseas tourists, therefore make up the overwhelming majority of Florida's enormous tourism market.

Sunshine Is Only Part Of Florida's Appeal

Florida's warm climate certainly helps, but its tourism appeal stretches far beyond winter escapes. The state has 825 miles of beaches along its Atlantic and Gulf coasts, according to VISIT FLORIDA, plus globally recognized theme park destinations in Central Florida. Miami, the Florida Keys, the Gulf Coast, and the state's many coastal communities give travelers additional reasons to return. The result is a destination that can serve family vacations, weekend escapes, cruises, beach trips, and seasonal getaways.

Texas Quietly Takes Third Place

Texas ranked third nationally in the 2024 Omnitrak domestic person-trip comparison. Separate research prepared for Travel Texas counted about 231.6 million trips to and within the state during 2024. About 78.7 million of those person-trips were classified as out-of-state travel, and that segment increased 5.9 percent from the previous year. Texas therefore draws substantial numbers of Americans from beyond its own large resident population.

Texas Benefits From Being Enormous

A Texas trip might involve restaurants and live music in Austin, major attractions in San Antonio, business and entertainment in Dallas-Fort Worth, or museums and dining in Houston. Travelers can also head toward Gulf Coast beaches, Hill Country towns, or the wide-open landscapes of West Texas. Travel Texas reported that leisure and personal travel accounted for about 184 million person-trips in 2024, far exceeding its business travel volume. The state's tourism market is clearly about much more than conventions and work trips.

New York Is Much More Than Manhattan

New York ranked fourth for domestic person-trip volume in the 2024 Omnitrak data. State tourism research counted 315.4 million total visitors in 2024, up 3 percent from the previous year. Approximately 308.5 million of those visitors were domestic, according to Empire State Development. That makes American travelers overwhelmingly responsible for New York's huge visitor volume.

The Rest Of New York Matters Too

New York City may dominate the state's tourism image, but New York stretches far beyond the five boroughs. Domestic travelers can visit Niagara Falls, the Finger Lakes, the Adirondacks, the Catskills, Long Island, and numerous smaller cities and historic communities. This geographic variety gives New York both major urban tourism and extensive outdoor and regional travel. The state's visitor economy consequently does not depend on one type of vacation.

North Carolina Rounds Out The Top Five

North Carolina ranked fifth nationally for domestic person-trip volume in 2024, with approximately 39 million domestic person-trips. It has competed closely with Pennsylvania and Tennessee for that position in recent years. Domestic travelers spent a record $35.6 billion in North Carolina during 2024. The state therefore punches well above what some travelers might expect from a destination without a tourism megacity like New York or Los Angeles.

North Carolina Has A Three-Part Advantage

North Carolina essentially offers travelers mountains, major inland cities, and the Atlantic coast in one state. Visit North Carolina highlights the Blue Ridge and Smoky Mountains in the west, Charlotte and the Raleigh-Durham region in the Piedmont, and 320 miles of barrier-island beaches along the coast. The Outer Banks alone combines beaches, lighthouses, maritime history, and outdoor recreation. That range makes North Carolina particularly adaptable for road trips.

Pennsylvania Is A Road-Trip Powerhouse

Pennsylvania ranked sixth in the Omnitrak domestic person-trip ranking for 2024. State tourism officials reported 201.6 million total visitors that year, nearly 10 million more than in 2023. More than 71 million of those were overnight visitors. Pennsylvania's position near several heavily populated East Coast markets makes it especially accessible for short trips.

History And Cities Keep Pennsylvania Busy

Philadelphia gives Pennsylvania some of the country's best-known sites connected with the American Revolution and the nation's founding. Pittsburgh supplies another major urban destination, while the Pocono Mountains, state parks, smaller towns, and sporting events broaden the state's appeal. Pennsylvania tourism officials note that roughly 72 million people live within a four-hour drive of the state. That enormous nearby population helps make weekend and road travel particularly important.

Tennessee Turns Music Into Tourism

Tennessee ranked seventh in the 2024 domestic person-trip ranking. The Tennessee Department of Tourist Development reported 147 million total visits during 2024 and a record $31.7 billion in direct visitor spending. International spending increased as well, but the state's visitor economy remains heavily tied to domestic travel. Tennessee has built an unusually recognizable tourism identity around music, entertainment, scenery, and road trips.

Nashville Is Only The Beginning

Nashville's country music industry makes it one of Tennessee's most visible destinations, while Memphis adds blues, soul, rock history, and barbecue culture. East Tennessee offers access to the Great Smoky Mountains and popular mountain communities. Chattanooga and Knoxville add additional city destinations and outdoor recreation. Few states combine several famous music traditions with a major national park region so effectively.

Georgia Claims The Eighth Spot

Georgia ranked eighth nationally for domestic person-trip volume in Omnitrak's 2024 comparison. Its tourism market combines one of the South's largest metropolitan areas with historic cities, mountains, lakes, and an Atlantic coastline. Atlanta functions as a major destination for entertainment, conventions, sports, food, and cultural attractions. The state also attracts travelers who never make Atlanta the main purpose of their trip.

Savannah Gives Georgia A Different Personality

Savannah offers historic architecture, public squares, restaurants, and a distinctly different atmosphere from Atlanta. Coastal destinations and islands extend Georgia's appeal toward beach travelers, while northern Georgia provides mountain scenery and outdoor recreation. Domestic overnight visitor research commissioned by Explore Georgia tracks trip purpose, activities, origins, and regional travel throughout the state. That variety helps Georgia compete with several better-known vacation states.

Ohio Makes The Top Ten

Ohio ranked ninth for domestic person-trip volume in the 2024 Omnitrak comparison. Its position may surprise travelers who associate the country's biggest tourism markets mainly with beaches and warm weather. Ohio benefits from several substantial metropolitan areas, including Columbus, Cleveland, and Cincinnati, as well as regional road travel. Trips to see relatives, attend events, visit attractions, or spend a weekend in another city all count toward domestic travel volume.

Not Every Popular Trip Is A Dream Vacation

Ohio illustrates an important point about tourism statistics. Domestic person-trip rankings include far more than the classic weeklong vacation people post about online. Americans travel for weekend breaks, sporting events, weddings, family visits, entertainment, business, and other personal reasons. States surrounded by large population centers can therefore accumulate impressive trip totals without being stereotypical resort destinations. Popularity in travel data and popularity on vacation wish lists are not necessarily the same thing.

Michigan Completes The Top Ten

Michigan ranked tenth in the 2024 Omnitrak domestic person-trip ranking. Pure Michigan reported that 131.2 million visitors traveled in the state during 2024 and spent $30.7 billion. The state's tourism industry produced an estimated $54.8 billion in total economic impact. Those figures help show the scale of travel in a state that is sometimes overlooked in national vacation discussions.

The Great Lakes Give Michigan An Edge

Michigan's geography gives it access to four of the five Great Lakes, along with thousands of inland lakes and extensive shorelines. Detroit provides a major urban destination, while northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula offer very different outdoor experiences. Summer lake vacations, fall trips, winter recreation, and city breaks allow Michigan to attract visitors during multiple seasons. Pure Michigan's long-running tourism marketing has also promoted destinations throughout the state rather than focusing on a single city.

Beaches Clearly Matter

Two of the top five states, California and Florida, are famous for extensive coastlines, while North Carolina also has a major beach tourism industry. California's official tourism site promotes beaches stretching through Southern California and the Central Coast, while VISIT FLORIDA highlights 825 miles of beaches. North Carolina promotes 320 miles of barrier-island coastline. Americans clearly do not have to leave the country to find dramatically different beach vacations.

Big Cities Are Another Powerful Magnet

Several states near the top of the ranking contain some of America's most prominent metropolitan destinations. New York has New York City, California has Los Angeles, San Francisco, and San Diego, Texas has several major metros, and Pennsylvania has Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. Georgia adds Atlanta, while Tennessee benefits heavily from Nashville and Memphis. Big cities create year-round reasons to travel that are less dependent on beach weather or ski conditions.

Road Trips Help Explain The Rankings

Domestic tourism is not limited to air travel, and several leading states sit within driving distance of huge population centers. Florida reported that non-air transportation accounted for the majority of its domestic nonresident arrivals in early 2025. Pennsylvania actively markets its accessibility to tens of millions of people living within a four-hour drive. Road accessibility makes shorter and more spontaneous trips possible, which can significantly increase person-trip volume.

Domestic Travelers Drive The Tourism Machine

International visitors receive plenty of attention because they often spend heavily, but Americans themselves supply enormous volumes of tourism within the United States. California reported that domestic travel represented 94 percent of its visits in 2024. Florida said domestic travelers represented about 91.5 percent of its total visitation that year. New York likewise reported that the overwhelming majority of its 315.4 million visitors were domestic.

A Visit Does Not Always Mean An Out-Of-State Visitor

There is one important wrinkle when interpreting state tourism totals. Some statewide visitation figures include residents traveling elsewhere within their own state, while the question of where Americans travel from other states is narrower. Texas, for example, separately reported about 152.9 million in-state person-trips and 78.7 million out-of-state person-trips in 2024. This is why a standardized domestic person-trip ranking is more useful for comparing states than simply lining up each state's headline visitor number.

The Same States Win For Different Reasons

California succeeds through extraordinary geographic variety, while Florida combines beaches and major attractions. Texas benefits from its huge cities and broad leisure market, and New York combines America's largest urban tourism destination with substantial regional travel. North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Georgia, Ohio, and Michigan each draw large domestic volumes through their own mix of cities, scenery, events, family travel, and accessibility. There is no single formula for becoming one of America's most traveled-to states.

The Top Ten Tell A Bigger Story

The 2024 domestic person-trip ranking puts California first, followed by Florida, Texas, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Georgia, Ohio, and Michigan. Some are obvious vacation giants, while others demonstrate how much American travel consists of road trips, family visits, events, and shorter regional getaways. The list also stretches from the Pacific to the Great Lakes and from the Northeast to the Deep South. Americans may travel all over the country, but these ten states attract an especially large share of their trips.

Why Younger Workers May Be Less Willing To Sacrifice Their Personal Lives For Business Travel

Business travel once carried an almost automatic sense of prestige. A flight, hotel room, and client dinner could signal that an employee was moving up in the company. Younger workers still recognize those benefits, but many are less willing to accept disrupted plans, unpaid personal costs, and lost weekends as unavoidable parts of professional success.
