Sorry California—These States All Have A Better Quality Of Life Than The Golden State


Not So Golden a State?

California’s reputation might be all palm trees and perfect weather—but the data tells a different story. According to the latest 2025 Quality of Life Index, California only ranks 29th in the nation. That means there are 28 states where people statistically live better. Whether it’s cheaper housing, cleaner air, shorter commutes, or less stress, these states are proving that “the good life” doesn’t always come with a California zip code.

28: Indiana

Quality of Life Score: 52.0
Why it beats California: Lower housing costs, strong community ties, and short commute times. Indiana’s blend of affordability and small-town friendliness makes daily life a little easier than California’s high-stress hustle. Many residents say they’re comfortable rather than chasing it.
