How Brave Are You, Really?
Some people celebrate Halloween with candy and pumpkin carving. Other people willingly pay money to be chased through the darkness by someone holding a chainsaw.
If you're in that second group, America has some truly terrifying places waiting for you. From abandoned prisons and creepy schoolhouses to enormous outdoor scream parks, these are 30 horror attractions every serious horror fan should experience at least once.
Do you have any to add to the list?
#30. Niles Scream Park — Niles, Michigan
Location: Niles, Michigan
Niles Scream Park isn't one haunted house—it's basically an entire evening dedicated to making you regret coming.
The massive seasonal attraction combines haunted houses, mazes and other experiences, with the attractions changing regularly enough to keep repeat victims—sorry, customers—coming back. It's also been frightening Michigan visitors for decades, making this a great starting point before we get into the truly nightmare-inducing stuff.

#29. Fear Farm — Phoenix, Arizona
Location: Phoenix, Arizona
Apparently wandering around a creepy farm after dark wasn't unsettling enough, so Fear Farm added professional monsters.
This sprawling Phoenix attraction combines multiple haunted experiences with an outdoor Halloween atmosphere, making it one of Arizona's best-known seasonal haunts. The elaborate environments are a major part of the fun—you aren't simply walking through dark hallways waiting for someone to jump out.
Although, yes, plenty of people will jump out.
#28. 13th Floor Haunted House — Denver, Colorado
Location: Denver, Colorado
If you've ever wondered why old buildings supposedly skip the 13th floor, this place has built an entire business around answering the question in the worst possible way.
Denver's 13th Floor uses elaborate sets, actors, animatronics and constantly changing themes to create a polished haunted-house experience. It's big, theatrical and designed to overwhelm your senses.
Basically, don't expect a teenager wearing a rubber mask to pop out from behind a curtain.

#27. Haunted Overload — Lee, New Hampshire
Location: Lee, New Hampshire
Haunted Overload looks like somebody took a Halloween fever dream and built it in the middle of the woods.
Enormous handmade creatures tower over visitors as they navigate this outdoor attraction, and the sheer artistry has earned it a devoted following. Giant monsters, elaborate structures and atmospheric lighting make it just as impressive visually as it is creepy.
Come for the scares. Stay because you're trying to figure out how they built that enormous demon.

#26. Los Angeles Haunted Hayride — Los Angeles, California
Location: Los Angeles, California
Los Angeles knows theatrical horror, so naturally its famous haunted hayride goes bigger than a tractor pulling people past a few skeletons.
Held in Griffith Park, this long-running Halloween attraction surrounds visitors with elaborate scenes, performers and monsters while leaning heavily into immersive storytelling.
You're technically sitting down for part of the experience, which sounds relaxing until you remember what you've purchased a ticket for.

#25. Spookywoods At Kersey Valley — Archdale, North Carolina
Location: Archdale, North Carolina
Spookywoods has been terrifying North Carolinians for decades, and it has had plenty of time to perfect the formula.
Visitors move through indoor and outdoor environments filled with actors, elaborate scenery and sudden scares. The rural setting does half the work before anyone even appears.
There is simply something about walking through dark woods in October that makes every rational decision you've ever made feel very far away.

#24. Factory Of Terror — Canton, Ohio
Location: Canton, Ohio
Factory of Terror has one thing many haunted houses desperately try to fake: an enormous industrial setting that already looks creepy.
The Canton attraction spreads its horror across a sprawling former factory complex, using different themed areas to keep visitors guessing.
It's huge, loud and disorienting—and because you're inside a massive industrial building, that little voice saying, "This place would be terrifying even without the actors," never completely goes away.

#23. Fear Factory — Salt Lake City, Utah
Location: Salt Lake City, Utah
Salt Lake City's Fear Factory occupies an old industrial complex with towering structures, underground passages and the kind of architecture haunted-house designers dream about.
The experience stretches through multiple buildings and levels, and thrill-seekers can encounter everything from tight passages to towering industrial spaces.
It's the sort of place where simply seeing the building from outside makes someone in the group say, "You know, we could just go for dinner instead."

#22. House Of Torment — Austin, Texas
Location: Austin, Texas
Austin's House of Torment has developed a reputation for delivering polished, aggressive scares rather than relying on a handful of predictable jump scares.
The 2026 season includes multiple themed experiences, including a Friday the 13th-inspired Jason attraction. Its own site also features enthusiastic visitor reviews praising the design, intensity and actors.
If you've always wanted Jason Voorhees considerably closer to your face, congratulations.

#21. Bates Motel & Haunted Hayride — Glen Mills, Pennsylvania
Location: Glen Mills, Pennsylvania
No, this isn't that Bates Motel—but Norman Bates would probably approve.
This Pennsylvania Halloween institution combines its famous haunted hayride with walkthrough attractions and elaborate outdoor effects. It's been operating for decades and remains one of the best-known haunts in the Philadelphia region.
The hayride also offers a wonderful opportunity to sit beside your friends and discover exactly which one screams loudest.
#20. The Beast — Kansas City, Missouri
Location: Kansas City, Missouri
The Beast has been scaring Kansas City since 1991, and its name isn't exactly overselling the experience.
Rather than simply sending visitors through a straightforward corridor, the attraction uses huge sets and maze-like environments where figuring out where you're supposed to go becomes part of the nightmare.
America Haunts named it one of its five national Fan Favorite attractions for 2026.
Getting lost is considerably less funny when monsters are involved.
#19. Massacre Haunted House — Montgomery, Illinois
Location: Montgomery, Illinois
Massacre Haunted House is for people who look at a normal haunted attraction and think, "Could this possibly be longer and more intense?"
The Illinois haunt packs an enormous amount of scenery and horror into its indoor experience, with elaborate rooms, monsters and effects designed to keep the scares coming.
Visitors clearly approve: Massacre finished #3 in USA Today's 2026 10Best Readers' Choice ranking of America's best haunted attractions.

#18. Woods Of Terror — Greensboro, North Carolina
Location: Greensboro, North Carolina

Its 2026 experience advertises 18 haunted attractions, all connected through its Monster Midway. There are roaming creatures, live entertainment and enough different horror environments that eventually everyone encounters the specific thing they hate.
Clowns? Darkness? Monsters? Creepy woods?
They've got you covered.

#17. The Dent Schoolhouse — Cincinnati, Ohio
Location: Cincinnati, Ohio
The Dent Schoolhouse occupies an actual school building dating to the 1890s, because apparently school wasn't frightening enough the first time around.
The attraction revolves around the fictional legend of murderous janitor Charlie McFree and has become one of Ohio's best-known haunts. The old-school setting gives everything an extra layer of atmosphere that a purpose-built warehouse simply can't reproduce.
Detention suddenly doesn't sound so harmless.
#16. 13th Hour Haunted House — Wharton, New Jersey
Location: Wharton, New Jersey
13th Hour goes after horror fans who appreciate production value almost as much as screaming.
Its attractions feature movie-quality props, elaborate special effects, animatronics and live performers. For 2026, visitors can tackle three different haunts, including areas that plunge guests into near-total darkness.
Morty users ranked it among America's scariest haunts for 2026, while USA Today also selected it among the year's national nominees.
#15. Queen Mary's Dark Harbor — Long Beach, California
Location: Long Beach, California
A haunted attraction aboard an enormous historic ocean liner already has an unfair atmospheric advantage.
Dark Harbor transforms the Queen Mary into a Halloween playground filled with mazes, performers and creepy maritime imagery. The ship itself has spent decades accumulating ghost stories, which makes wandering around it after dark particularly effective.
Fake ghosts on an allegedly haunted ship?
That's efficient horror.

The property offers six attractions, including its haunted hayride, Lost Carnival, Delirium and Pitch Black. The attraction's site also features glowing Google reviews from seasoned haunt visitors who rank it among their favorites.
USA Today readers put Reaper's Revenge in the national top 10 for 2026.
#12. Field Of Screams — Mountville, Pennsylvania
Location: Mountville, Pennsylvania
Field of Screams has frightened more than one million visitors, which means at least a million people have voluntarily ignored every survival instinct they possess.
The Lancaster County attraction combines a haunted hayride, two huge haunted houses and a wicked woods walkthrough.
It's now in its 34th season and has earned national recognition over the years from outlets including USA Today. If quantity of screaming matters, this place has an impressive résumé.

Location: Spring City, Pennsylvania
Pennhurst doesn't need fake creepy architecture. Its setting is the real thing.
The attraction operates on the grounds of the former Pennhurst State School and Hospital, creating an atmosphere that's considerably heavier than your average warehouse haunt. Elaborate haunted experiences now occupy parts of the historic complex.
Pennhurst was also selected among USA Today's national haunted-attraction contenders for 2026.
This one is creepy before the actors even clock in.

The Pontiac landmark sends visitors through four floors and more than half a mile of indoor horror, combining actors with elaborate effects and interactive scares. It has appeared repeatedly in discussions of America's biggest and most intense haunted attractions.
This isn't a quick stroll through some cobwebs.
By the time you reach the exit, you've earned it.

#8. Bennett's Curse Haunted House — Dundalk, Maryland
Location: Dundalk, Maryland
Bennett's Curse has built its reputation on monsters, detailed environments and the kind of theatrical horror that looks like somebody spent far too much time thinking about your nightmares.
Apparently, visitors appreciate the effort.
In USA Today's 2026 10Best Readers' Choice Awards, Bennett's Curse finished #2 in the entire country, behind only Cutting Edge.
That's a lot of Americans collectively saying, "Yes, please terrify me again."

#7. Halloween Nights At Eastern State Penitentiary — Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Location: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Here's a useful haunted-house trick: put the attraction inside a gigantic abandoned prison.
Halloween Nights takes over Eastern State Penitentiary, the historic 19th-century prison whose crumbling cellblocks are unsettling enough during daylight.
The event fills the complex with five haunted houses along with Halloween entertainment and themed experiences. USA Today readers ranked it among America's top 10 haunted attractions for 2026.
Some buildings simply don't require much decorating.
#6. Creep LA — Los Angeles, California
Location: Los Angeles, California
Creep LA takes a different approach from the traditional "walk down hallway, monster screams, repeat" formula.
Its experiences lean heavily into immersive theater, placing visitors inside unsettling stories where performers and environments do the psychological heavy lifting.
That more intimate approach has developed a serious following. Creep LA landed at #5 in USA Today's 2026 national Readers' Choice ranking.
Sometimes one creepy person standing a little too close is scarier than 50 animatronic zombies.

#5. The 13th Gate — Baton Rouge, Louisiana
Location: Baton Rouge, Louisiana
The 13th Gate has a reputation among hardcore haunt fans for being almost absurdly detailed.
Visitors move through a series of cinematic horror environments packed with actors, effects and elaborate sets. Morty's 2026 user-driven ranking placed The 13th Gate at #1 among America's scariest haunted houses.
Its 2026 season even includes Flashlight Fright Nights.
Because apparently walking through this place with normal lighting wasn't difficult enough.
#4. Netherworld Haunted House — Stone Mountain, Georgia
Location: Stone Mountain, Georgia
Netherworld is one of those attractions that horror fans know by name even if they've never been to Georgia.
Created by film and television professionals, the attraction is famous for enormous creatures, elaborate original characters, movie-quality scenery, stunts and extremely committed performers.
America Haunts named Netherworld one of its Top 5 Fan Favorites for 2026, while USA Today readers ranked it #4 nationally.
This is less "haunted house" and more "walk directly into a horror movie."
#3. The Darkness — St. Louis, Missouri
Location: St. Louis, Missouri
The Darkness has spent decades building a reputation as one of America's heavyweight haunted houses.
The attraction is known for massive sets, sophisticated effects, monsters and the sort of elaborate environments that make visitors stop thinking about how the scare works—which is exactly when somebody sneaks up behind them.
For serious haunt enthusiasts, The Darkness has become one of those names you eventually have to cross off the horror bucket list.
Preferably with a friend you can sacrifice first.

#2. Cutting Edge Haunted House — Fort Worth, Texas
Location: Fort Worth, Texas
Cutting Edge has one of the greatest settings in the business: a roughly century-old former meatpacking facility.
Visitors spend around 55 minutes navigating multiple floors of industrial horror filled with intense effects, darkness and live performers.
And the public has spoken. Cutting Edge won #1 Best Haunted House in USA Today's 2026 10Best Readers' Choice Awards and was also named one of America Haunts' five national Fan Favorites.
A former meatpacking plant probably wasn't going to become a relaxing spa anyway.

#1. Halloween Horror Nights — Universal Orlando Resort, Florida
Location: Orlando, Florida
For horror fans, Halloween Horror Nights is less a haunted attraction and more an annual pilgrimage.
Universal transforms its Orlando theme park after dark with elaborate haunted houses, scare zones and armies of performers, often combining original concepts with famous horror franchises. The production values are exactly what you'd expect from a company that literally makes movies.
What makes HHN special is the scale. You're not simply entering one haunted house—you can spend an entire night bouncing between completely different nightmares.
And once you've experienced a professionally built horror-movie set with a monster charging toward you, the plastic skeleton hanging from your neighbor's porch just doesn't hit quite the same.
For the horror fan who wants the full blockbuster experience, this is the bucket-list trip.
