AI Travel Assistants Are Coming. Here’s What They Could Do During A Trip

For years, travel apps mostly helped people search, book, and store confirmations. In 2026, several companies are pushing AI further into the trip itself, where a traveler may need answers quickly and may not want to dig through menus. Delta Concierge is now available to all SkyMiles members in the Delta app, while Navan is building its Edge product around an always-on AI travel assistant for frequent business travelers. The common goal is to keep more of the trip inside one conversation, so the traveler can ask for help without repeatedly reopening bookings, searching old messages, or explaining the itinerary from the beginning. That could turn travel support from a search task into a running, trip-aware service.

The important change is context. Google says Gemini can pull real-time information from Maps, Flights, and Hotels, and can also reference trip details in Gmail when users enable its connected features. Navan says Edge can personalize results using preferences shared in chat, booking history, and connected loyalty programs, which points toward tools that remember how a traveler likes to move through a trip instead of starting from zero every time.

That matters on a work trip because the useful question is often not “Where should I go?” but “What should I do next?” Delta says its assistant recognizes a member’s nearest upcoming trip, which removes the need to hunt for a reservation before asking for help. The broader direction is toward software that can understand the traveler’s schedule, reservations, preferences, and current location well enough to give an answer that fits the moment.

When Plans Change, The Assistant Could Move First

Disruptions are where AI travel tools may become most valuable. Delta Concierge can explain a flight change, help a customer find alternative flights, support rebooking during disruptions, and provide checked-bag status within the chat. It can also handle eligible full-itinerary cancellations and can submit a refund request or issue an eCredit, according to Delta’s August 2026 update.

Navan is aiming for an even more coordinated version of that experience. The company has described a workflow in which Edge can rebook a traveler after a flight cancellation, contact the hotel about a later arrival, and move a dinner reservation once the traveler approves the changes. Navan’s current Edge page also says the system asks for explicit confirmation before it books, changes, or cancels a trip, while human travel agents remain available around the clock.

Expedia Group outlined a similar idea when it introduced Romie. The company said the AI companion was designed to monitor weather changes and last-minute disruptions, suggest alternatives, and update an itinerary in real time. That model points toward a major shift in travel software: instead of waiting for the traveler to notice a problem and search for a solution, an assistant could surface the issue and present the next practical options.

For a business traveler, that could reduce the number of separate calls, app screens, and confirmation emails that have to be managed while moving between meetings. It does not mean every disruption will become a one-tap fix, since airline rules, inventory, hotel policies, and traveler approval still shape what can happen. The more realistic near-term model is a digital first responder that handles routine changes quickly and hands complicated cases to a person with the trip context already attached.

Getting Around Could Become A Conversation

Once the traveler reaches the destination, AI can shift from booking support to local navigation. Google’s Ask Maps can answer complex questions about places, provide personalized suggestions, and turn some recommendations into actions such as restaurant reservations or directions. Google is also expanding Immersive Navigation with alternate-route tradeoffs, real-time route information, destination previews, entrance guidance, and parking suggestions.

That could be useful when a workday is built around unfamiliar offices, conference centers, client sites, and tight meeting windows. Instead of searching several times for a coffee shop, a quiet lunch spot, a parking option, and the right building entrance, a traveler could ask a sequence of connected questions and keep the same context. Google’s January 2026 navigation update also says Gemini can answer questions while someone is walking, such as what neighborhood they are in, what restaurants are nearby, their estimated arrival time, or when their next meeting begins.

Language support is moving in the same direction. Google released Gemini 3.5 Live Translate in June 2026 with near-real-time speech translation across more than 70 languages, and the model is rolling out in the Google Translate app on Android and iOS. Google also said Grab was testing the technology for multilingual communication between drivers and travelers during pickups, which gives a clear example of how live translation could help when a traveler needs to coordinate transportation in a place where they do not speak the local language.

The practical result is that a future travel assistant may not feel like a separate travel app at all. It could appear inside the map, airline app, company travel platform, calendar, or translation tool a traveler is already using. For business travelers, the most useful version may be the one that quietly connects those pieces, remembers the destination and schedule, and reduces the amount of retyping required throughout the day.

The Expense Report May Stop Following You Home

The trip does not end when the flight lands, especially for employees who still have receipts and expense reports waiting. SAP says Joule in Concur Expense can manage expense reports through natural-language conversations, including creating, viewing, editing, copying, submitting, and recalling reports. It can also work with expense items, receipts, itemizations, and report warnings, and can help identify missing or inconsistent information before submission.

Joule is also being used on the travel side of Concur. SAP’s current documentation says the Booking Agent can search for flights, present options, refine the search, select a fare, and complete the booking through a guided conversational flow. Hotel booking through AI assistance is also supported, which shows how the same style of interface can move from choosing travel to dealing with the financial trail that follows it.

Concur already has automation that links itineraries and spending even without a chat interface. Its Trip-based Expense Assistant can create a report from a trip itinerary and add incoming expenses whose dates match the trip, helping keep trip costs grouped together as they arrive. Combined with conversational AI, that kind of plumbing suggests a future in which a traveler can ask what is missing, attach a receipt, correct a category, and finish much of the report before heading home. The distinction matters because the AI does not have to invent the trip from scratch when it can work from reservation records and expense data already inside the company’s travel system.

For companies, this is more than a convenience feature. A travel assistant that can see itinerary data, company rules, and expense information may be able to guide employees toward approved options while reducing manual cleanup later. For travelers, the appeal is simpler: less time reconstructing a three-day trip from a pile of confirmations and card entries after the work itself is finished.

Convenience Still Needs A Reality Check

AI travel assistants are becoming more capable, but they are not a reason to stop checking important details. NIST has warned that generative AI systems can produce confidently stated information that is incorrect, a problem the agency describes as confabulation. That makes source-connected tools especially important in travel, where a gate, departure time, reservation, or payment detail can change quickly and a polished answer is not useful if the underlying information is stale.

Personalization also depends on access to personal data. Google says its travel features can use information from connected services such as Gmail when users enable Personal Intelligence, while Navan says Edge can use booking history, loyalty programs, and preferences shared in conversation. Business travelers should understand what they have chosen to connect, particularly when work schedules, travel records, and payment information are involved.

Availability is also uneven. Delta Concierge is broadly available to SkyMiles members but still carries a beta label as new features are added, Google has rolled out different Maps features by region and device, and Navan Edge is still described as early access on its current product page. The AI travel assistant, in other words, is arriving as a collection of features rather than as one finished product that works the same way for every traveler.

Still, the direction is becoming easier to see. The next generation of travel tools is being built to do more than recommend a hotel or draft an itinerary; it can increasingly interpret the trip, respond to changes, guide the traveler through a destination, and help close out the paperwork. For business travelers, the biggest gain may be fewer small tasks competing for attention, with a person still available when the situation needs judgment or extra help.
