A Curd Above The Rest
Poutine may have started in Quebec, Canada—but America has spent the last few years trying very hard to prove it understands fries, gravy, and cheese curds too. And who better to say which states do it best than Canadians themselves?
We looked at everything from Canadian expat opinions and online forum debates to Quebec traveler reviews and restaurant ratings. While some places came surprisingly close to the real thing, others committed what Canadians would probably classify as crimes against gravy.
Here are the 30 states Canadians say make the best poutine in America.
30: Alabama
Alabama sneaks onto this list mostly through barbecue joints that accidentally discovered smoked-meat poutine works incredibly well. Canadians may roll their eyes at the Southern twists, but many admitted the flavor combinations can actually slap. The cheese curd situation is inconsistent, though, which keeps Alabama near the bottom. Still, if you want brisket gravy on fries at 1 a.m., Alabama suddenly becomes very convincing.

29: Arizona
Arizona’s poutine scene is weirdly strong in college towns and late-night food spots. Canadians especially praised places that keep things simple instead of turning poutine into a pile of random toppings. The desert state obviously lacks French-Canadian roots, but it makes up for it with creative gravy styles and serious comfort-food energy. Also, apparently poutine after hiking hits differently.

28: Nevada
Las Vegas has embraced poutine as premium drunk food, which honestly feels spiritually correct. Canadians praised several casino-area spots for serving proper cheese curds instead of generic shredded cheese. The problem is consistency. One place serves incredible gravy, while another serves something that looks like soup poured onto fries. Nevada ranks because the highs are very high—even if the lows are culinary chaos.

27: Colorado
Colorado treats poutine the same way it treats burgers and tacos: upscale, craft-focused, and slightly too expensive. Canadians respected the quality ingredients but occasionally complained that Denver chefs try too hard to reinvent the dish. Still, the fries are usually excellent, the gravy is rich, and cheese curds are surprisingly easy to find. Ski-town poutine also earned bonus points from homesick Canadians.

26: Georgia
Georgia’s best poutine spots lean heavily into Southern comfort food, and Canadians were surprisingly into it. Fried chicken poutine, spicy gravy, and Cajun-inspired versions earned cautious approval from many reviewers. Purists weren’t thrilled, but most agreed Georgia at least understands the core idea: rich, messy comfort food that makes you immediately need a nap afterward.

25: California
California absolutely overcomplicates poutine sometimes. Canadians found avocado poutine, vegan poutine, sushi poutine, and at least one version involving truffle foam. That said, the state also has enough talented chefs to produce genuinely excellent versions when it wants to. Los Angeles and San Francisco both have standout spots that even skeptical Quebec visitors admitted were “actually pretty legit.”

24: Illinois
Chicago helped Illinois crack this ranking thanks to its booming gastropub scene. Canadians liked that many places use thick-cut fries and darker gravy instead of trying trendy shortcuts. Some locals even import real cheese curds from Wisconsin, which instantly boosts credibility. Deep-dish pizza may dominate the state’s food reputation, but Illinois quietly built a respectable late-night poutine culture too.

23: Louisiana
Louisiana took poutine and immediately threw Cajun seasoning at it, which somehow worked. Canadians praised the state’s gravy-making abilities because Louisiana already understands rich sauces better than most of America. Crawfish poutine became especially divisive online, with some Canadians horrified and others fully embracing the chaos. Either way, Louisiana definitely leaves an impression.

22: Pennsylvania
Pennsylvania benefits from strong comfort-food culture and serious bar-food competition. Pittsburgh and Philadelphia both have respected poutine spots, especially around hockey bars and breweries. Canadians appreciated the straightforward approach here: crispy fries, solid gravy, and no unnecessary gimmicks. It may not have the cultural connection of northern states, but Pennsylvania earns points for reliability.

21: Alaska
Cold weather and comfort food go together perfectly, which helps Alaska overperform here. Canadians said several Alaskan pubs serve poutine that feels surprisingly close to what you’d find in smaller Canadian towns. Huge portions also helped. Apparently nothing pairs better with freezing temperatures than fries drowning in gravy while snow piles up outside the window.

20: Texas
Texas treats poutine like barbecue’s chaotic cousin, and honestly, it’s entertaining. Brisket poutine was repeatedly praised by Canadians, especially when smoked meat replaced traditional toppings. Texans also understand oversized comfort food portions, which feels essential to proper poutine culture. Some versions drift dangerously far from the original recipe, but the flavor usually wins people back quickly.

19: Ohio
Ohio quietly built a stronger poutine scene than most people realize. Canadians specifically mentioned Cleveland and Columbus as underrated destinations for legit poutine spots. The Midwest love of greasy comfort food definitely helps. Ohio also benefits from being close enough to Canada that some restaurants actually care whether Canadians approve—which apparently matters more than you’d think.
18: Connecticut
Connecticut quietly punches above its weight thanks to New England pub culture and easy access to Canadian influence from the Northeast corridor. Canadians praised several gastropubs and late-night spots for keeping poutine simple and traditional instead of turning it into a science experiment. The state may not have the loudest food reputation in America, but its best poutine spots consistently surprise people who stop in expecting little more than lobster rolls and pizza.

17: Oregon
Oregon approaches poutine with intense hipster energy, but Canadians admitted the state’s food quality often backs it up. Portland especially earned praise for using local cheese curds and excellent gravy recipes. Mushroom gravy versions became surprisingly popular among Canadian reviewers too. Oregon occasionally feels one flannel shirt away from opening a “small-batch artisan poutine lab,” but the food works.
16: Tennessee
Tennessee’s comfort-food culture gives it an unexpected advantage in the poutine conversation. Nashville especially has embraced loaded fries and late-night gravy-heavy dishes that feel spiritually connected to poutine, even when the toppings drift into Southern territory. Canadians appreciated that Tennessee’s versions usually focus on flavor first and presentation second, which honestly feels like the correct philosophy for this dish.

15: Massachusetts
Massachusetts combines college-town late-night culture with strong pub food, creating a surprisingly solid environment for poutine. Boston’s Canadian connections also help. Canadians praised Irish pubs and hockey bars throughout the state for serving respectable traditional versions. Some New England seafood-inspired variations were more controversial, although lobster poutine apparently has its defenders.

14: Idaho
Potato quality matters enormously in poutine, which gives Idaho a huge built-in advantage. Canadians repeatedly praised the fries here, calling them some of the best in America for proper poutine texture. The state’s smaller food scene limits the number of standout locations, but when Idaho gets poutine right, it gets very right.

13: New Jersey
New Jersey excels at greasy late-night food, so poutine fits naturally into the state’s personality. Diners, sports bars, and boardwalk food spots helped boost its ranking. Canadians appreciated that New Jersey generally avoids trying to make poutine “healthy,” which already puts it ahead of several other states. The portions also border on medically concerning—in the best possible way.

12: Montana
Montana’s rugged, cold-weather comfort-food culture makes poutine feel oddly natural there. Canadians especially liked roadside diners and ski-town pubs serving giant portions after long days outdoors. The state doesn’t have massive variety, but many spots nail the basics. Canadians repeatedly described Montana poutine as “honest,” which honestly feels like the most Canadian compliment possible.

11: Washington
Washington’s proximity to British Columbia helps a lot. Seattle has several respected poutine spots, and Canadians crossing the border often compare them favorably to places back home. The state also benefits from strong coffee-shop and brewery culture, where poutine naturally thrives. Washington avoids many of the weird over-the-top toppings that drag other states down.
10: New York
New York has enough restaurants to do literally every version of poutine imaginable, including several Canadians wish they could forget. But the best spots in New York City and upstate are genuinely respected north of the border. Upstate New York especially benefits from stronger Canadian influence and easier access to proper cheese curds.
9: New Mexico
This ranking shocked a lot of Canadians too. New Mexico’s spicy food culture unexpectedly pairs extremely well with poutine. Green chile poutine earned huge praise online, with many Canadians admitting they were skeptical until they tried it. The state proves that creative regional twists can work when the fundamentals stay intact.

8: New Hampshire
New Hampshire quietly benefits from heavy New England and Quebec crossover traffic. Canadians visiting ski areas often stumble onto surprisingly authentic poutine in local pubs and taverns. The state doesn’t have flashy poutine culture, but it consistently delivers strong traditional versions. Bonus points for cold weather making gravy-covered fries feel emotionally necessary.

7: Michigan
Michigan’s closeness to Ontario gives it a huge advantage. Detroit especially has several respected poutine spots influenced by Canadian visitors and hockey culture. Canadians praised the state for understanding proper cheese curds better than most of America. Michigan also embraces greasy diner food with zero shame, which turns out to be extremely important in poutine rankings.

6: Rhode Island
Rhode Island becoming a poutine powerhouse feels ridiculous until you actually look at the food scene. Canadians praised the state’s creative but restrained approach, especially in Providence. Several chefs there clearly understand the difference between “interesting” and “culinary war crime.” The small size of the state also means locals fiercely debate which poutine spot is best.
5: North Dakota
North Dakota may be America’s most secretly Canadian-feeling state, which explains this ranking. Canadians crossing the border often find comfort-food spots that feel extremely familiar. The winters practically demand heavy gravy-based meals, and locals fully embrace that reality. North Dakota doesn’t have trendy poutine culture. It just quietly serves giant, satisfying plates of it.

4: Vermont
Vermont feels culturally closer to Quebec than much of America does, and that absolutely shows in the food. Canadians repeatedly praised Vermont’s cheese quality and commitment to traditional preparation. The state’s farm-to-table obsession actually helps poutine instead of hurting it for once. Vermont also takes gravy weirdly seriously, which Canadians deeply appreciate.

3: Maine
Maine’s French-Canadian influence runs deep, especially in northern parts of the state. Canadians repeatedly praised small-town diners and roadside restaurants that serve surprisingly authentic poutine. Maine also avoids overcomplicating things. The fries are crispy, the gravy is rich, and the cheese curds squeak properly. Sometimes simplicity really is the secret.

2: Minnesota
Minnesota’s cold weather, hockey culture, and general Upper Midwest personality make it one of America’s most naturally compatible poutine states. Canadians often described Minnesota as “basically honorary Canada,” which definitely helped its ranking. The state also understands comfort food at a spiritual level. Cheese curds are easy to find, portions are massive, and nobody apologizes for eating it.

1: Wisconsin
In the end, Canadians kept coming back to one thing: cheese curds matter. And nobody in America takes cheese curds more seriously than Wisconsin. The state combines excellent dairy culture, strong bar food traditions, massive comfort-food portions, and surprisingly authentic preparation. Canadians still insist Quebec owns the gold standard overall, but when it comes to American poutine, Wisconsin earned genuine respect. That’s about as close to a Canadian blessing as you’re going to get.
