Countries Where American Travelers Say Renting A Car Is More Trouble Than It’s Worth

When To Do Yourself A Favor

Renting a car can open up places that trains and tours never reach, but it can also turn a vacation into an obstacle course of unfamiliar traffic laws, narrow streets, expensive fuel, confusing rental policies, and nerve-racking local driving. A 2024 international survey found these concerns are widespread among travelers.

India

India topped a 2024 survey of 2,000 international motorists as the country where respondents felt most nervous about driving. Dense traffic can combine cars, motorcycles, buses, rickshaws, pedestrians, and even livestock, while congestion in major cities makes simply getting around stressful. Hiring a driver can look awfully appealing.

Venezuela

Venezuela placed second in the same international survey, earning a 6.97 out of 10 “scare score.” For an American traveler unfamiliar with local roads and conditions, renting a car introduces additional navigation and communication challenges that may outweigh the independence of having your own wheels.

Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe ranked third among the destinations international motorists said they would be most nervous to drive in. Road conditions can vary considerably once travelers venture beyond major routes, while adjusting to left-side driving adds another complication for Americans accustomed to sitting on the opposite side of the car.

Morocco

Morocco can produce an unforgettable road trip, but driving yourself is not necessarily the easiest way to experience it. The country ranked fourth for driving anxiety in the 2024 survey. Unfamiliar road customs, crowded urban streets, motorcycles, pedestrians, and navigation through old cities can overwhelm visiting motorists.

Thailand

Thailand combines two things that can immediately unsettle American drivers: left-side traffic and enormous numbers of motorcycles. The survey ranked it fifth worldwide for driving anxiety. Heavy traffic in Bangkok and Chiang Mai can further reduce the appeal of renting a car unless your itinerary genuinely requires one.

China

China ranked sixth among the countries motorists felt most nervous about driving in. Beyond navigating unfamiliar traffic, an American traveler needs to investigate licensing requirements carefully before assuming a U.S. license or ordinary International Driving Permit will permit them to drive. In many itineraries, public transportation is considerably simpler.

Tunisia

Tunisia came seventh in the international driving-anxiety survey. Although renting a car can be useful for travelers venturing beyond major tourist centers, unfamiliar road behavior, signage, traffic conditions, and local driving rules can make independent driving considerably more stressful than arranging transfers, taxis, or organized transportation.

Brazil

Brazil's enormous size makes a rental car sound useful, but the distances themselves can become part of the problem. Brazil ranked eighth in the survey of intimidating countries for foreign drivers. Travelers also have to contend with unfamiliar roads, congestion in major cities, and concerns about vehicle security.

Colombia

Colombia tied Brazil with a 6.71 “scare score.” Mountainous geography can produce winding roads and lengthy journeys, while traffic in major cities can turn a seemingly short drive into an ordeal. Depending on your itinerary, domestic flights, buses, taxis, and hired drivers can be easier than self-driving.

Malaysia

Malaysia placed tenth among the countries foreign motorists were most nervous about driving in. Americans must immediately adjust to left-side driving, and busy urban roads can be intimidating. If your trip largely revolves around Kuala Lumpur and other well-connected destinations, a rental car may create more hassles than freedom.

Mexico

Mexico was the highest-ranked North American country in the survey, coming 11th. Renting can be worthwhile for particular regions, but Americans should research insurance requirements, road conditions, tolls, parking, and the areas through which they plan to travel rather than assuming driving will resemble a road trip back home.

Turkey

Turkey was the European country that made surveyed international motorists most nervous. Istanbul alone provides a persuasive argument for leaving the rental car behind, while unfamiliar traffic conventions and congested streets can raise the stress level considerably. Turkey placed 12th overall with a 6.68 scare score.

Vietnam

Motorcycles are fundamental to Vietnamese road traffic, which can make driving a full-sized rental vehicle unnerving for visitors unfamiliar with the flow. Vietnam ranked 13th in the international survey. For many American tourists, taxis, transfers, trains, buses, and domestic flights remove a considerable source of vacation stress.

Hungary

Hungary might not immediately seem intimidating, yet it tied Chile for 14th place. The survey specifically noted heavy truck traffic on major Hungarian highways as something that can make overtaking challenging for visitors unfamiliar with local traffic patterns. Budapest's extensive public transportation also makes a car unnecessary for many trips.

Japan

Japan's orderly roads don't necessarily translate into easy driving for Americans. You drive on the left, road signs and navigation can be unfamiliar, and dense cities hardly cry out for another automobile. Japan ranked 19th for driving anxiety, while its superb rail system makes skipping the rental particularly tempting.

South Africa

South Africa ranked 21st among destinations where international motorists felt most nervous about getting behind the wheel. Americans must adapt to left-side driving while also considering unfamiliar routes and security. Renting can still make sense for certain itineraries, but travelers should research their routes before setting off.

Greece

Those romantic Greek roads can become less charming from behind the wheel. Greece's islands and mountains feature narrow, winding routes, sometimes with limited shoulders or barriers, while ancient streets weren't designed for modern automobiles. Greece ranked 23rd among the countries that made foreign motorists most nervous.

Italy

Italy offers some magnificent road trips, but renting makes far less sense when your itinerary centers on Rome, Florence, Venice, or other well-connected cities. Narrow historic streets and complicated urban driving are stressful enough, while another rental-car study also gave Italy particularly weak customer-satisfaction results.

Belgium

Belgium topped a separate study of problematic European countries for car renters. Researchers considered rental prices, accident rates, customer reviews, fuel prices, road quality, and congestion. Brussels traffic can make driving particularly unrewarding, especially when Belgium's rail network can move visitors between major cities without parking headaches.

Portugal

A rental is tempting if you're exploring rural Portugal, but city-centered vacations are another story. Portugal placed third in the European rental-car study, which cited accident rates as a concern despite relatively inexpensive rentals. Travelers also need to understand fuel, toll, and return policies before driving away.

Germany

Germany's excellent roads don't automatically make renting the smartest option. Germany placed fourth in the European rental study because of its combination of cost and accident risk. Add expensive fuel, unfamiliar road rules, and an extensive rail network, and many American visitors may find trains considerably more relaxing.

United Kingdom

Driving on the left is the obvious adjustment, but Americans also encounter right-hand-drive cars, roundabouts, narrow rural lanes, one-way systems, parking restrictions, and crowded cities. The UK ranked fifth in the European rental study, while opposite-side driving was travelers' single most commonly cited anxiety about driving abroad.

Switzerland

Few countries make going car-free as easy as Switzerland. The European study found Switzerland had the highest average rental price among its ten lowest-ranked countries at $60 per day. With an extensive public transportation network available, many visitors may struggle to justify the extra rental, fuel, and parking expense.

Austria

Spectacular Alpine roads make Austria appealing to drivers, but the European rental study ranked it seventh overall and recorded the highest accident rate among the ten countries examined. If your itinerary focuses on Vienna, Salzburg, and other well-connected destinations, rail travel can eliminate rental expenses and driving anxiety entirely.

Ireland

Ireland is a classic case where having a car can be wonderful and exhausting simultaneously. Rural exploration favors driving, but Americans must adjust to left-side traffic, right-hand-drive vehicles, narrow roads, and unfamiliar roundabouts. Ireland also made the European study's ten most troublesome countries for renters.
